About Us

Welcome to LMC! Our small, dynamic middle school blends rich academics, a sincere devotion to the arts, and service to the community. In our truly diverse school, students work collaboratively and with technology to explore the essential questions of each curricula. We believe that by supporting collaboration between students who are culturally and linguistically diverse, we are preparing our students for success in an ever-changing world.

For over 20 years our school has served the children and families of Manhattan’s Community District 2. In 2010 we moved to our current location in Lower Manhattan and through the move we have maintained the vision of our founding principal: To establish a small, progressive middle school where teachers get to know the personal strengths and interests of their students and strong relationships between them are developed. New York is a big city, but we take steps to ensure that your child’s education feels very personal:

  • To ensure that every one of our students is challenged, we set and track their individual learning goals throughout the year. We want LMC students to be self-aware and reflective learners and we take time to support students as they evaluate their progress and identify the next steps we will take to continue their learning.

  • Every child is different and each brings their own special talents and contributions to a school community. Our focus on the arts helps us illuminate and support your child’s interests and passions. We have 5 full-time arts teachers at LMC who teach students how to play an instrument, enhance their skills as a drawer, painter or sculptor, dance modern, ballet, and hip hop, design video games, shoot photography and video, develop their vocal talents, and learn to prepare and perform in front of an audience.

  • Advisory groups are comprised by 10 students and one LMC staff member. Three times a week these groups meet to learn and discuss topics facing our students, our school, and our world. Topics include: navigating relationships with friends and family, developing strong academic and work habits, and embracing difference and diversity. Through advisories our students design service learning projects that they engage with through monthly field trips into the community.
